The Opportunity


As a Shift Trader, you will be responsible for managing the optimisation of the country’s largest portfolio of zero-carbon generation, with EDF’s ever-growing fleet of net-zero supporting Grid-scale batteries, wind & solar, as well as being the sole operator of the nation’s Nuclear generation.

To perform this role to an excellent standard requires deep knowledge of power market fundamentals combined with understanding of how National Grid operates the national electricity transmission system, and specifically how generators interact with it. If you are inexperienced do not be concerned, an initial three-month training programme delivered by leading industry trading experts will set you down the path to become an effective & commercially astute Trader.

The capacity for further personal development, both personally and from a skills & knowledge perspective, is also immense, as optimisation within the electricity trading market increasingly relies upon the right blend of automation, algorithms & human experience. Hence, you will also have the opportunity to influence the future development of the Team’s suite of operational & market analysis IT applications.

In summary, this role provides an exciting opportunity to play a key part in the push towards net-zero.

  • Seamlessly sharing knowledge & information with your on-shift Trading partner, as well as around the wider Team of fourteen, helping everyone to progress and maintain crucial work / life balance;
  • Maintaining an enviable record of operational integrity within a highly regulated market

The Role and Skills

Qualifications and Experience
  • Qualified with a numerate degree or with appropriate equivalent experience
  • Proven ability to operate with integrity and confidence, interpreting complex/incomplete information and able to make considered commercial decisions under tight deadlines
  • Strong team player with ability to communicate effectively
  • Clear ability to demonstrate both personal initiative & influencing skills
  • Exhibits a strong desire to achieve highest of standards and drive for personal improvement
  • Prior experience of working in energy optimisation or Shift Trading environment would be advantageous

Technical/Commercial Knowledge and Skills
  • Strong numerical, analytical and IT skills
  • Track record of accurate, high quality work
  • Coding language skills (such as Python, VBA or similar) advantageous
  • Strong commercial aptitude with prior knowledge of GB energy markets would be advantageous
